Josh was also having problems at school and was to join the basketball team. But we see later how he comes to join and gets to play with the dog. The dog has some unique abilities. We see buddy being able to shoot and make a score. The crowd falls in love with him as well. It is at this point where the initial owner Norm sees th e dog on television and decides to come and claim him back to be able to cash on his abilities (Monica).
